I trained as a Registered Nurse
(adults) at Salford Royal Hospital just outside
Manchester, qualifying in 1982. I gained experience
in medicine, general surgery, orthopaedics and
colorectal surgery before taking up the post of Lead
Nurse in the Intestinal Failure Unit at Hope
Hospital in Salford in 1996. I gained a BA (Hons) in
Health Studies in 1995.
The Intestinal Failure Unit is one of
only two in the United Kingdom specifically funded
and designated by the Department of Health (National
Commissioning Group) for the treatment and
management of complex IF patients. As the Lead Nurse
I am required to provide frequent advice to local,
national and international colleagues from many
disciplines, regarding the care of IF patients. This
includes attending and being an active participant
in regular local, regional, national and Department
of Health meetings to provide expert nursing advice
and knowledge and a recognised contributor to the
body of knowledge concerning IF at a local and
national level.
I am a regular attendee and
contributor at many national and international
conferences and have authored and co-authored
various published papers on different aspects of
intestinal failure.
I have recently been integral in
securing funding for a corporate Nutrition Support
Team within my Trust.
