Clinical
nurse specialists: adding value to
care
An executive summary
Nurses are the largest component
of the NHS workforce and frequently
the subject of significant change
and challenge in terms of their
role. Recent world-wide economic
events have forced service planners
and commissioners to look carefully
at the contribution nurses make
delivering high quality, effective
and person-centred care. Of all the
developments in nursing, the role of
the specialist nurse has been one of
the most exciting, but also one of
the least understood and valued. The
Royal College of Nursing (RCN) has
made securing a sustainable future
for specialist nurses a major goal
of its strategic campaigning around
national parliamentary elections and
when influencing comprehensive
spending reviews for health and
social care funding (RCN, 2010).

DH Perceptorship Framework 2010
The period of time following
registration as a health care
professional, can be a challenging
time.
We all know that good support and
guidance during this period is
essential. Newly registered
practitioners who manage the
transition successfully are able to
provide effective care more quickly,
feel better about their role and are
more likely to remain within the
profession -

Oral feeding difficulties and
dilemmas: A guide to practical care,
particularly towards the end of life
This is the central message from a
Working Party report published today
by the Royal College of
Physicians in conjunction with
the British Society of
Gastroenterology. It has
been prepared in response to
continuing unease about the lack of
consensus, including among doctors,
about when artificial nutrition and
hydration is appropriate.

High Impact Interventions for
Nursing and Midwifery published
Nurses and midwives care
passionately about improving the
care they provide to their patients.
Proof of that ambition was
demonstrated when nurses and
midwives posted 600 submissions on
the High Impact Actions web site in
just three weeks.
A large group of experienced nurses
and midwives have identified the
eight high impact actions that are
outlined in this document from the
website submissions.

Planning Care -
The Patients’ Perspective
This nationwide survey was jointly
commissioned ...as one of the first
moves to discover what patients and
their representative organisations
understand and think about the
government care-plan initiative.
Care plans are a form of
patient-friendly 'roadmap' that
records the treatment and social
support that a person with a
long-term illness needs.
Care plans have three main aims:
-
to improve efficiency and
coordination among health and
social services;
-
to improve the patient
experience of these services;
-
and to improve patients' health
outcomes

Interesting NT article re Syringe
pressures
This link is to a NT article which
looked at pressures generated by
different syringes sizes and gives
fairly good evidence to suggest that
current best practice (use a large
syringe) is in fact not supported by
the evidence. Although the trial is
small it is of interest to those of
us using syringes with feeding tubes
Links\National Correspondence\Nasogastric
tube feeding - which syringe size
produces lower pressure and is
safest to use Practice

The Social Market Foundation
Health Project Final Report
FROM FEAST TO FAMINE; Reforming the
NHS for an age of austerity
'The
question, then, must be how to
ration while safeguarding key
principles of equity and
universalism, and maintaining a high
quality service. What is needed is a
mechanism to encourage people to
ration themselves: a limited demand
management tool that is consistent
with protecting the quality of the

Shaping the Future of Care
Together
A new vision for care and support
This Green Paper sets out a
vision for a new care and support
system. As we all know, more and
more of us are living longer which
is a good thing, but more of us will
also live with needs for care and
support. The current care and
support system was designed in the
1940s and we need to develop a
system that fits our needs in the
21st century. We need a system that
is fairer, simpler and more
affordable for everyone. To build
this, we will need to make some big
decisions and reach agreement across
society on the right way forward for
England. So, this is the beginning
of a Big Care Debate -
